Basketball Recap: El Capitan Skates Past Red Mesa with Ease

El Capitan won the last time they faced Red Mesa and things went their way on Saturday too. The El Capitan Eagles blew past the Red Mesa Redskins, posting an 86-28 victory. The Eagles have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won seven contests by 26 points or more this season.

El Capitan's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Jairus Hammon, who posted 16 points along with seven assists and five boards. Hammon's evening made it five games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Shez Barlow, who had 21 points and three blocks.

El Capitan smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4.3 offensive boards per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 12.6.

Despite the loss, Red Mesa saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Braxton Harvey earned six points and four steals. That's the most steals Harvey has posted since back in December of 2024.

El Capitan has been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight matches, which provided a nice bump to their 10-11 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 76.9 points per game. As for Red Mesa, this is the second loss in a row for them and also nudges their season record down to 10-11.

El Capitan has already played their next contest, a 101-18 win against Shonto Prep on the 28th. As for Red Mesa, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 58-51 defeat against Whitehorse on the 27th.
