Despite the defeat, Melrose saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Sadie Smith had 40 assists and 14 digs. Smith has been hot for a while, having posted 19 or more assists the last nine times she's played. Another player making a difference was Anna Burns, who had 19 digs and two assists.

Melrose's loss dropped their record down to 10-4. As for Newburyport, the victory (which was their eighth in a row) raised their record to 14-3.

Looking ahead, Melrose will head out on the road to square off against Wakefield Memorial at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Newburyport, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Lynnfield at 5:00 p.m.
