Softball Recap: Westville Extends Winning Streak to Five

Westville hadn't done well against Knox recently (they were 0-6 in their previous six matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Monday. The Blackhawks were the clear victors by a 13-3 margin over the Redskins. The Blackhawks might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four games by seven runs or more this season.

Kierstin Vargas made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off seven hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Kiersten Vaughan, who fired off two home runs and three runs while going 3-for-3. Those home runs were her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Livia Stark, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI and two doubles.

Westville lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've posted since back in April of 2024.

The win was the fifth in a row for Westville, bringing their record up to 8-1. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Knox, they have been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-10 record this season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Westville will face off against South Central at 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Blackhawks 3.9, the Satellites 2.8) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Knox, they will be playing at home against Tippecanoe Valley at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Redskins' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Vikings have averaged an impressive 7.1 runs per game this season.
