National Highlight Reel: Phillip Starks scores school-record 59 points

Oak Hill coach Steve Smith notches 800th career victory; Montville girls end 79-game losing streak.

Phillip Starks poured in a school-record 59 points as Prince Tech (Hartford, Conn.) outlasted Windham Tech (Willimantic, Conn.), 109-98.

The 5-foot-9 senior guard drilled 25 of 35 shots from the field and nine of 11 from the free throw line while surpassing the previous record of 57 points which was set in 1998 by DelShawn Jackson. Starks averaged 27.4 points and 8.9 assists as a junior while leading the Falcons to state runner-up honors in Class S.

Windham Tech coach Jeff Belanger told the Hartford Courant, "We tried to wear them down, but Phil Starks didn't get worn down."

Christian Gonnelli had a career-high 42 points to go with 12 rebounds in a losing cause.

* MaxPreps' No. 1 team, Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.), defeated Montverde (Fla.) Academy, 58-44, behind MVP Quinn Cook (22 points) to win the 'Iolani Classic in Honolulu. Along the way, coach Steve Smith notched his 800th victory. In 26 years, Smith has won an incredible 94 percent of his games against a schedule second to none.

* Undefeated Westbury Christian (Houston) defeated Yates (Houston), 103-91, to win the 71st annual Houston ISD Tournament. Delvin Dickerson, who had 25 points and 12 rebounds, was named MVP.

* Florida State University recruit Terry Whisnant tied the school record with 10 3-pointers, finishing with 43 points as Cherryville (N.C.) defeated South Point (Belmont, N.C.), 92-74.

* Jerron Smith, a 6-3 senior, scored 44 points as Decatur (Federal Way, Wash.) defeated Wenatchee (Wash.), 86-58. The Portland State recruit is averaging 28.6 points.

* Bill Self (Kansas), Mike Montgomery (Cal) and Lorenzo Romar (Washington) all were present last week to take a good look at 6-8 junior Brandon Ashley as Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland, Calif.) routed previously unbeaten Berkeley (Calif.), 67-35.

* West Jordan (Utah) junior Jordan Loveridge (6-1) broke his own school record by a single point with 40 points during a 67-54 victory over Cottonwood (Salt Lake City, Utah).



* The Jordan Brand Classic is being moved from New York's Madison Square Garden to Charlotte, N.C. It will be held on April 16, 2011, at the Time Warner Cable Arena.

* Huntington Prep Academy (Huntington, W.Va.) junior guard Negus Webster-Chan (6-7) has made a commitment to the University of Louisville, according to the Huntington Herald-Dispatch.

* Dan Fleming recorded his 300th coaching victory as La Salle (Cincinnati) defeated Archbishop McNicholas (Cincinnati, Ohio), 56-31. {PAGEBREAK}GIRLS BASKETBALL: 79-GAME LOSING STREAK ENDS
Montville (N.J.) ended a 79-game losing streak with a 44-32 victory over Kinnelon (N.J.). The milestone victory was achieved despite a 21-7 first-quarter deficit.

* Rebekah Dahlman tied a school record with 41 points as Braham (Minn.) defeated Duluth East (Minn.), 83-52. The 5-10 sophomore guard already has scored 2,000 points and is on target to break the Minnesota career record by the time she graduates. From a family of eight basketball players, she is the granddaughter of Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame coach John Kundla.

* Six-foot sophomore Rebecca Greenwell scored 42 points as Owensboro Catholic (Ky.) lost to Ballard (Louisville, Ky.), 69-62.

* Kenton (Independence, Ky.) standout Sydni Wainscott scored a career-high 41 points during a 67-53 victory over Scott (Covington, Ky.).



* The Denver Post reports that 6-3 junior standout Katie Heckman of Regis Jesuit (Aurora, Colo.) will miss the rest of her junior year due to knee surgery. She has scholarship offers from many Division I colleges, including Duke, Stanford and Texas.

* Milestone coaching victories were posted last week by Tony Ware of Mayfield (Ohio), No. 300; and Tamar Hill of La Canada (Calif.), No. 200.{PAGEBREAK}FOOTBALL: WEEKS, RICEDORFF SET RECORDS
Show Low (Ariz.) posted a 13-1 record and won the Class 3A state title behind record-setting junior wide receiver Josh Weeks (6-4, 205) and senior quarterback Rathen Ricedorff (6-0, 165).

Ricedorff will graduate with nearly every Arizona state passing record. This year he completed 235 of 344 passes for 4,413 yards and 55 touchdowns with just eight interceptions. He also ran 93 times for 482 yards and 10 touchdowns. Assistant coach Will Poulson told MaxPreps that Ricedorff will go on a two-year Mormon mission, then attend Arizona State University.

Weeks, who has made a commitment to Brigham Young University, set Class 3A state records this year with 20 touchdown catches and 1,561 receiving yards. He had 73 catches for a 21.4 average. He also made 55 tackles. With his senior year remaining, Weeks already holds Class 3A career records with 149 catches, 41 for touchdowns.

* Bayside (Virginia Beach, Va.) senior wide receiver/defensive back Demetrious Nicholson (5-9, 160) has made a commitment to the University of Virginia, according to the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot. He earlier was named Virginia's Gatorade Player of the Year.

* The Los Angeles Times reports that Chaminade (West Hills, Calif.) kicker Matt Goudis has switched his commitment from Boise State to the University of Michigan.



* Syracuse University has received a commitment from senior quarterback Ashton Broyld of Rush-Henrietta (Henrietta, N.Y.), according to the Syracuse Post-Standard. The 6-3, 230-pounder passed for 1,961 yards and ran for 1,540 – accounting for 48 touchdowns – while leading his team to a 13-0 record and the Class AA state title.

* Though he's just a junior, Zach Banner of Lakes (Lakewood, Wash.) already is a recruiting target of the nation's premier college football programs. He's 6-9 and 300 pounds and athletic for his size (he also stars in basketball). Recruiters really pay attention when they see his 3.6 GPA and note that he has been class president for three straight years. Expect him to get bigger, too, because he just turned 17 on Christmas day.

* Luke Falk, a 6-4 sophomore quarterback from Logan (Utah), is transferring to Oaks Christian (Westlake Village, Calif.), according to the Los Angeles Times. He threw 17 touchdown passes in the fall.

* Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) plans to open its 2012 football season in Dublin, Ireland. Several other American teams are being invited to participate in the high school competition, which will be held in conjunction with the University of Notre Dame-Navy game.

* Rex Weaver is retiring as head football coach at Hopkins (Mich.). Since 1981, he compiled a 214-91-1 record.

* Larry Bruno, who coached the great Joe Namath in high school, died recently at age 88. Bruno posted a 184-52-9 record in 20 years at Beaver Falls (Pa.), which included a 10-0 record and WPIAL Class AA title with Namath as his quarterback in 1960. Bruno was the presenter when Namath made the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
