Genesis McNeill named 2022-23 MaxPreps Rhode Island High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year

Senior guard led Juanita Sanchez Complex to a 21-4 record, Division I championship.

Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school girls basketball. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2022-23 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.

Genesis McNeill of Juanita Sanchez Complex (Providence) is the 2022-23 MaxPreps Rhode Island High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year. The 5-foot-11 senior guard led the Cavaliers to a 21-4 record, Division I championship and a spot in the RIIL State Tournament Elite 8.

For the season, McNeill averaged 17.3 points, 7.1 rebounds, 8.0 assists and 10.9 steals per game. She tallied 12 points, 13 rebounds, seven steals and four blocked shots in the 34-23 Division I championship win over La Salle Academy.

McNeill recorded a quadruple-double in a 68-27 win over East Providence in December, compiling 12 points, 12 rebounds, 13 assists and 10 steals. She was also credited with a pair of triple-doubles. during the 2022-23 campaign.

Jillian Rogers of North Kingstown was the 2021-22 MaxPreps Rhode Island Player of the Year. Rogers led Skippers to a 23-2 record and the Division I title.

Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released in April. Past selections include 2022 WNBA Most Valuable Player A'ja Wilson (2014) as well as 2022 All-WNBA picks Skylar Diggins-Smith (2009), Sabrina Ionescu (2016), Jonquel Jones (2012), Nneka Ogwumike (2008), Kelsey Plum (2013), Breanna Stewart (2012) and Alyssa Thomas (2010).
