Basketball Game Preview: Wagon Mound Trojans vs. Maxwell Bears

Wagon Mound is 0-10 against Maxwell since February of 2020 but things could change on Monday. The Wagon Mound Trojans will be playing in front of their home fans against the Maxwell Bears at 5:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Wagon Mound took a loss when they played away from home last Wednesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Thursday. They really took it to San Jon for the full four quarters, racking up a 96-14 win. The contest was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 47-13.

Meanwhile, Maxwell had already won 11 in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 25.8 points) and they went ahead and made it 12 on Saturday. They breezed by the Grizzlies to the tune of 67-27. Given the Bears' advantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked 42nd, while the Grizzlies are ranked 138th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Maxwell's victory was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 14-1. Those victories came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 26.0 points per game. As for Wagon Mound, their win bumped their record up to 3-6.

Wagon Mound was dealt a bruising 96-33 loss at the hands of Maxwell when the teams last played back in December of 2024. That matchup was all but decided by halftime, at which point Wagon Mound was down 54-18.
