Football Recap: Mount Olive Piles Up the Points Against Vernon

Mount Olive extended their winning streak to six on Friday, bumping them up to 6-0. They blew past the Vernon Vikings 62-27. The Marauders' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.

Brayden Longo was his usual excellent self, rushing for 233 yards and five TDs while picking up 14.6 yards per carry. He showed off some serious burst, cutting through the defense on one rush that went for 64 yards. The team also got some help courtesy of Frank Gallo, who rushed for 33 yards and one touchdown.

Mount Olive's run defense was locked in: Vernon could only muster 3.2 yards per carry. The team can thank James Giammanco for the heroic effort on defense: he. Mount Olive didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 9.8.

Mount Olive's defense didn't let Kimkowski Nate, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for four sacks. Jared Martini was particularly dangerous to the passing game, picking up two himself.

As for Vernon, their defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 4-3. While losing is never fun, they can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New Jersey football rankings (they are ranked 134th, while Mount Olive is ranked 41st).

Several Vikings players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Nate, who threw for 182 yards and three TDs.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mount Olive will welcome Wayne Valley at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. That game will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Longo and Elizer Estevez. As for Vernon, they will challenge Lakeland Regional at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.
