Mater Lakes Academy is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Thursday. They secured a 58-54 W over Barron Collier. Given the Bears' advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 80th, while the Cougars are ranked 240th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Vanessa Vancott was her usual excellent self, shooting 5-for-8 from deep and dropping a double-double with 29 points and 11 rebounds. That makes it 20 consecutive games in which she has scored at least a third of Mater Lakes Academy's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Mya Glover, who went 6-for-14 on her way to 18 points and five boards.
Meanwhile, Northwestern came tearing into Thursday's contest with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 30.3 points), and they left with even more momentum. They walked away with a 51-39 victory over the Tigers.
Northwestern's win came from a few key players Mater Lakes Academy will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Jade Yacinthe, who went 7-for-11 to rack up 16 points along with eight rebounds and four steals. She has been hot, having posted two or more steals the last eight times she's played. Terriyah Montgomery was another key player, putting up ten points in addition to seven boards and six assists.
Northwestern smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That's the most offensive rebounds they've posted since back in December of 2024.
Northwestern pushed their record up to 21-4 with the win, which was their 15th straight at home dating back to last season. The wins came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 25.8 points over those games. As for Mater Lakes Academy, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matches, which provided a nice bump to their 19-9 record this season.
Tuesday's game is shaping up to be a masterclass in shooting: Mater Lakes Academy has been dynamite from deep this season, having made 34.9% of their threes per game. However, it's not like Northwestern struggles in that department as they've made 38.5% of their three-pointers this season. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out. Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other basketball content.
