Softball Game Preview: Cottonwood Colts vs. Murray Spartans

Cottonwood hasn't had much luck against Murray recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Colts will face off against the Spartans at 3:30 p.m. Cottonwood has given up an average of 13.9 runs per game this season, but Tuesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Cottonwood is headed into Tuesday's contest looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their fourth straight game on Monday. They came up short against Granger, falling 13-6.

Gretta Lewis was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, she struck out 16 batters over six innings while giving up four earned (and nine unearned) runs off eight hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.

In other batting news, Breeya Busey made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with two runs and one triple.

Meanwhile, Murray came up short against Stansbury on Friday and fell 9-5.

Murray saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Lyndee Marshall, who went 1-for-3 with two runs.

Murray has also traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-8 record this season. As for Cottonwood, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-12.

Murray's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Tuesday. Cottonwood has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Murray, though, as they've been averaging only 4.1 strikeouts. Will Cottonwood keep running through batters, or will the Spartans buck the trend?

Cottonwood suffered a grim 21-3 defeat to Murray when the teams last played on Thursday. Can the Colts avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
