Volleyball Recap: Canutillo Takes a Loss

After flying high against Jefferson on Tuesday, Canutillo came back down to earth. The Eagles lost 3-0 to the El Paso Tigers on Friday. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Tigers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 3-1 back in September.

While Canutillo ultimately came up short, they really made El Paso work, particularly in the second set. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-17, 26-24, 25-18.

Despite the loss, Canutillo still got an impressive performance from Sophia Ontiveros, who had 31 assists and nine digs. Ontiveros is on a roll when it comes to assists, as she's now posted 13 or more in each of the last 29 games she's played.

El Paso can attribute much of their success to Gaby Lara, who had 16 digs.

Canutillo has been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last nine matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 18-17 record this season. As for El Paso, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 25-13.

Canutillo does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for El Paso, after both having extra time off, they and Americas will shake off the rust and duke it out at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
