Basketball Recap: Amundsen Takes a Loss

Amundsen was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their seventh straight defeat. They took a blow against the Phillips Wildcats, falling 63-33. While losing is never fun, the Vikings can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 363rd, while the Wildcats are ranked 52nd).

When it comes to explaining why Amundsen lost, don't look at Jane Belmont. Despite the final result, she went 5 for 10 en route to 13 points and three steals. That was a full 39.4% of Amundsen's points, marking the third time in a row she's posted more than a third of the team's points.

Phillips' victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Nakiyah Williams, who went 6 of 10 on her way to 13 points along with seven boards and three steals. That's the most rebounds Williams has posted since back in November of 2023. The team also got some help courtesy of Nila Wills, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 11 boards.

Amundsen's loss dropped their record down to 7-18. As for Phillips, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 19-8.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Amundsen will host Curie at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Phillips, they will look to defend their home court on Thursday against Morgan Park at 5:00 p.m.
