Softball Game Preview: Berwick Panthers vs. St. John Eagles

The Berwick Panthers will square off against the St. John Eagles at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.

It was a proper cat-fight when Berwick took on St. James on Tuesday. Berwick blew past St. James 17-6. The Panthers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine contests by eight runs or more this season.

The team relied heavily on Shelby Taylor, who went 2-for-3 with four runs, five RBI, and one stolen base. Those five RBI gave her a new career-high. Bryanne Davis was another key player, scoring three runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.

Berwick always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .541. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as St. James only posted an OBP of .346.

Meanwhile, St. John entered their tilt with Ascension Catholic on Tuesday with eight consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with nine. They skirted past the Bulldogs 11-9. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Eagles have posted since February 28th.

St. John's win was their ninth straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 16-2. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.2 runs over those games. As for Berwick, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-10 record this season.

Berwick came out on top in a nail-biter against St. John in their previous matchup back in February of 2024, sneaking past 15-14. Will Berwick repeat their success, or does St. John has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
