Baseball Game Preview: Vela Sabercats vs. McAllen Memorial Mustangs

The Vela Sabercats will face off against the McAllen Memorial Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Neither of those teams managed to put together many runs in their previous contests, so the offenses might be a little more motivated than usual.

Last Wednesday, Vela came up short against Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North and fell 4-1. The Sabercats have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

David An was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out six batters over 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Vela saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Nick Guevara, who scored a run while going 1-for-3. Matthew Abundiz also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Meanwhile, Wednesday just wasn't the day for McAllen Memorial's offense. They came up short against Pioneer on Wednesday, falling 10-0. The Mustangs' defeat signaled the end of their three-game winning streak.

McAllen Memorial now has a losing record of 9-10. As for Vela, their loss dropped their record down to 10-8.

Vela was able to grind out a solid win over McAllen Memorial in their previous matchup back in March of 2024, winning 6-2. Will Vela repeat their success, or does McAllen Memorial has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
