Softball Preview: Washington Patriots vs. Curtis Vikings
The Washington Patriots will head out on the road to face off against the Curtis Vikings at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Curtis took a loss in their last match and will be looking to turn the tables on Washington, who comes in off a win.
While Patriots fans will have to keep waiting for their team to come home, they shouldn't be too worried about the road trip considering the result of Wednesday's season opener. They were the clear victor by a 13-4 margin over Lincoln on Wednesday. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Patriots as it put an end to their five-game losing streak dating back to last season.
Steve-Rae Garcia-Zamora was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 19 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits. Garcia-Zamora was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs while going 3-for-4.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Zoe Garcia-Zamora, who went 4-for-5 with five RBI, three runs, and two doubles. Another player making a difference was Dee Moore, who scored two runs and stole Two bases. while going 2-for-4.
Washington was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .421. The last time their batting average was this high was back in April of 2024.
Meanwhile, Curtis unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They lost 25-15 to Silas on Wednesday. Sadly, the loss continues a streak the team started last season, making it five in a row.
Curtis got a massive performance out of Sophia Woodall, who scored two runs while going 3-for-4. The dominant performance gave Woodall a new career-high in hits. The team also got some help courtesy of Melanie Spivey, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3.
