Baseball Game Preview: Thoreau Hawks vs. Navajo Prep Fighting Eagles

Thoreau is 0-10 against Navajo Prep since June of 2021 but things could change on Thursday. The Hawks will be playing in front of their home fans against the Fighting Eagles at 3:00 p.m. Having both just faced considerable losses, both teams are looking to turn things around.

It was a Battle of the Birds when Thoreau took on Zuni on Thursday. The Hawks lost 23-5 to the Thunderbirds. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last three times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Irvin Tom made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two RBI. Lathan Largo was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Hozho Academy hit Navajo Prep with a four-run first inning on Tuesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Fighting Eagles came up short against the Wolves, falling 14-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Fighting Eagles have suffered since March 6th.

Navajo Prep saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Keith Dodge, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Dodge is becoming a predictor of the Fighting Eagles' success: when he posts at least three hits the team is 2-1 (and 7-10 when he doesn't). Another was Khol Johnson, who went 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.

Navajo Prep's defeat dropped their record down to 9-11. As for Thoreau, their loss dropped their record down to 5-9.

The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Thoreau has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 9.5 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Navajo Prep struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 9 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
