The Lafayette Fighting Irish will challenge the Maryville Spoofhounds at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Lafayette is looking for their season's first win.
On Wednesday, Lafayette came up short against Savannah and fell 6-3.
Lafayette saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Wyatt Proffit, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, it may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Maryville ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 9-8 victory over South Harrison. The Spoofhounds' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Grant Smail made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over four innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. Smail was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 2-for-4. Those hits marked the first that he got this season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Carson Hageman, who scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Canon Creason, who scored a run while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.
Maryville kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Maryville is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-5 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. As for Lafayette, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-8.
Lafayette came out on top in a nail-biter against Maryville in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, sneaking past 5-4. Will the Fighting Irish repeat their success, or do the Spoofhounds have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
