League recap: Cumberland wins, gets boost in standings

Cumberland was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from seventh to fourth in Division II-B. Earlier in the week, the Clippers triumphed over Rogers 35-6.

The Vikings suffered a letdown when it was bounced from the state Top 25 this week after a 35-6 loss to Cumberland. Rogers had been ranked ninth, but fell to 27 following the defeat.

Chris Skurka's team's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Brendan Guerin threw for 155 and one touchdown and Mitchell Baxter had 135 yards receiving. On the ground Jared Talbert chipped in 95 yards. Trent Vasey helped Cumberland's passing attack out by catching two balls for 20 yards.

The Clippers' Guerin and Baxter have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Guerin has thrown for 372 yards this season, while Baxter has 12 catches for 214 yards. St. Raphael Academy's Charles Correa leads the league in rushing yards with 228.

The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between the Saints and Cumberland. St. Raphael Academy comes into the matchup ranked 15th in the state, while the Clippers ranks eighth.

There should be lots of points scored when Michael Sassi's team and Cumberland face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Saints comes in having scored 50 this season, while the Clippers have scored 69. St. Raphael Academy scored 14 points last week as it fell to West Warwick.

Central and Shea played the most hotly contested game in Division II-B this week, with Central eventually emerging with a 12-6 victory.
