League recap: Loss drops Quitman out of state Top 25

Quitman suffered a letdown when it was bounced from the state Top 25 this week after a 55-30 loss to Quitman. The Panthers had been ranked 24th, but fell to 29 following the defeat.

West Lauderdale moved up to 136 from 163 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 4A Region 5.

Franklin Jones and Franklin Jones gave Quitman a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. Jones threw for 143 yards and two touchdowns, while Jones ran for 170 yards. Josh Davis also contributed to the rushing game with 137 yards on the ground.

De'Andre Wansley was the best wideout in the league this week as Newton County fell to Germantown. Wansley racked up five receptions for 79 yards. Jamoral Graham helped Newton County's passing attack out by catching four balls for 28 yards.

6-foot-0 quarterback Jacob Edwards of the Cougars is the league leader in passing yards this season with 637. He has also thrown seven touchdowns. On the ground, Steven Bynum's team's Jones has rushed for 975 yards which leads the league. The leading receiver in the league this season is Ocatvious Cooley. The Laurel star has 22 catches for 329 yards.

Jones of the the Panthers is only 25 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season.

A big matchup in 4A Region 5 this week will be when Newton County takes on Northeast Jones. As it stands, Jackie Williamson's team is in second, while the Tigers are in third.

The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when the Cougars take on Northeast Jones. Newton County has allowed 59 points this season, while Keith Braddock's team has given up 82. The Cougars allowed 19 points last week as they lost to the Mavericks.

The Trojans took down Morton 45-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
