Baseball Recap: Kellis Comes Up Short

Kellis extended their losing streak to 13 on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 3-17 in the process. They came up short against the Ironwood Eagles, falling 12-4. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Eagles this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 15-2 back in March.

Kellis saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Johnny Celaya, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with two RBI and one double. Diego Banda also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

As for Ironwood, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-14. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.5 runs over those games.

On Ironwood's side, Lane Stilwell made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out 12 batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off two hits (and only one walk). Stilwell has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one walk in ten consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-5 with three stolen bases, five RBI, and one run. Those five RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Max Schattner, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with four stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. Ironwood is 2-1 when Schattner posts two or more stolen bases, but 4-13 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Jonathan Ostrom, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

We've got plenty of inter-region action coming up soon. Kellis is set to square off against their familiar foe Sunrise Mountain at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Ironwood will take on rival Lake Havasu at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday.
