Baseball Recap: Seventy-First Has No Trouble Against Douglas Byrd

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Lumberton, Seventy-First was happy to have turned things around on Tuesday. Everything went their way against the Douglas Byrd Eagles as Seventy-First made off with a 12-2 win. The result was nothing new for the Falcons, who have now won three contests by ten runs or more so far this season.

Nasir Nelson made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 12 over 5.1 innings pitched. Seventy-First is undefeated when Nelson posts eight or more strikeouts, but 0-7 otherwise. Nelson was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 2-for-4. That's the most hits he has posted since back in May of 2024.

In other batting news, Cory Bush was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing six bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. He is becoming a predictor of Seventy-First's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-1 (and 0-6 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Melvin Correa Martinez, who scored two runs and stole five bases while going 1-for-3.

Seventy-First always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .526. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Seventy-First's victory was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-5 and their overall record up to 3-7. As for Douglas Byrd, they are on a 30-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-7.
