Baseball Recap: Goldsboro Comes Up Short

Goldsboro was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their eighth straight defeat dating back to last season. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost an 8-7 heartbreaker at the hands of the Village Christian Academy Knights. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Knights this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 9-4 last Friday.

Brayden Smith put in work while hitting and pitching. He struck out ten batters over five innings while giving up three earned runs off five hits. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in strikeouts. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing Two bases. while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances.

In other batting news, Avery Grant made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-4 with one home run, two stolen bases, and two runs. That home run was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Armani Scrufari, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double.

Even though they lost, Goldsboro always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .622. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Goldsboro's record now sits at 0-6. As for Village Christian Academy, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 5-1.

Coming up, Goldsboro is taking a road trip to challenge East Carteret at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. East Carteret is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10 runs per game this season. As for Village Christian Academy, they will welcome The O'Neal School at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
