Baseball Recap: Elko Takes a Loss

Elko fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Fernley on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Vaqueros by a score of 10-9. The Indians just can't catch a break and have now endured four losses in a row.

Travis Monett put in work while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out seven batters over 5.1 innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off eight hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and one double.

In other batting news, Coy Jones was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Cooper Aranguena also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Elko's defeat dropped their record down to 13-15. As for Fernley, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 10-14-1 record this season.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Elko beat Fernley by a score of 8-0 later that day.
