Basketball Recap: East New York Family Academy Proves Higher State Rank Is No Mistake

Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only East New York Family Academy walked away with it. They took down the John Jay Wolves 56-40 on Monday. Given East New York Family Academy's advantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 77th, while John Jay is ranked 232nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

East New York Family Academy had a senior duo take command as Arianna Mercado went 6 for 15 en route to 16 points and seven steals and Olivia Eugene went 6 of 12 on her way to 13 points and four steals. Mercado's afternoon made it 14 games in a row in which she has scored at least 15 points. Janaya Henderson was another key player, almost dropping a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.

East New York Family Academy has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 17-8 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 66.8 points over those games. As for John Jay, their defeat was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 14-11.

As of now, neither East New York Family Academy nor John Jay have any future games scheduled.
