Softball Recap: Laton Triumphs

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Laton ultimately got the result they hoped for on Monday. They skirted past the Valley Christian Academy Lions 17-16. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Mustangs have posted since March 9th.

The team relied heavily on Jaylene Zazueta, who got on base in five of her seven plate appearances with five runs and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Camila Figueroa, who went 5-for-7 with four runs and one double.

Laton kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 18 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4.1 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 contests they've averaged 12.8.

Laton has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-11-1 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 22.2 runs over those games. As for Valley Christian Academy, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-3.

Coming up, Laton will be playing in front of their home fans against Alpaugh at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The Buffalos have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 18.33 runs per game on average), something the Mustangs will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Valley Christian Academy, they are taking a road trip to square off against Bishop Diego at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
