Softball Recap: Newburgh Free Academy Starts Season with Win Against Warwick

Newburgh Free Academy had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Warwick Wildcats on Wednesday, sneaking past 8-6. This was payback for the Goldbacks, who suffered a 6-5 loss the last time these two teams met.

Samantha Williams made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out six batters over seven innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits. Williams was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 1-for-4.

In other batting news, Camryn LeClair and Parker Mullarkey did most of the damage at the plate: LeClair scored a run while going 2-for-3, while Mullarkey scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances. Ashlyn LeClair was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.

Warwick's defeat dropped their record down to 1-1.

Coming up, Newburgh Free Academy will look to defend their home field on Friday against Cornwall Central at 4:15 p.m. As for Warwick, they will head out on the road to challenge Washingtonville at 4:45 p.m. on Monday.
