Basketball Recap: Avery Silvas' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Sierra Vista over Western

Sierra Vista was the 44-32 winner over Western when they last played one another back in February of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Sierra Vista Mountain Lions fell just short of the Western Warriors by a score of 32-29 on Thursday. The contest marked the Mountain Lions' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

Sierra Vista lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Avery Silvas, who posted 11 points. Donnayja Gibson was another key player, putting up nine points.

Western found their leader in sophomore Laila Lwaba, who had 15 points along with seven boards and five steals. Lwaba has been hot recently, having posted four or more steals the last four times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Kyra Pace, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 11 boards.

Sierra Vista's loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 10-7. As for Western, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 9-6.

Sierra Vista will be playing in front of their home fans against Cimarron-Memorial at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Sierra Vista is on a eight-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), Cimarron-Memorial a three-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court. As for Western, they will head out on the road to challenge Rancho at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
