Alleghany is 0-10 against Mount Airy since December of 2016 but things could change on Friday. The Alleghany Trojans will welcome the Mount Airy Granite Bears at 6:30 p.m.
Alleghany is headed into Friday's contest looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Monday. They came up short against Starmount, falling 58-37. While losing is never fun, the Trojans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 418th, while the Rams are ranked 170th).
Despite the defeat, Alleghany saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Elizabeth 'Ellie' Collins went 5-for-6 en route to 10 points. What's more, 'Ellie' Collins also posted a 83% field goal percentage, which is the highest she's posted since back in February of 2024. Ellie Crouse was another key player, putting up six points.
Even though they lost, Alleghany was working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Starmount only posted five assists.
Meanwhile, Mount Airy beat Elkin 36-25 on Wednesday.
Alleghany better keep an eye on Da'Nya Mills. She was instrumental in Mount Airy's win, posting nine points and six boards. Another player making a difference was Carrie Marion, who posted eight points and three steals.
Alleghany's loss dropped their record down to 4-17. As for Mount Airy, they are on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last ten matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 9-12 record this season.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Alleghany has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 30.4 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Mount Airy struggles in that department as they've been averaging 33.8 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Alleghany came up short against Mount Airy in their previous matchup back in January, falling 25-14. Will Alleghany have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more basketball content.
