GERVAIS, Ore. - A big 35-point first quarter helped carry the Pirates to a 55-6 victory over Gervais (Ore.) on Saturday.
Dayton scored on a rushing touchdown, a punt return touchdown by
Jered White, a
Nathan Bernards touchdown pass to
Justin Sutton, a touchdown run by Bernards and a touchdown run in the quarter.
After taking the lead on a rushing touchdown in the first quarter, DHS led 42-0 at the half.
The Pirates expanded their lead to 43 points entering the fourth quarter. Dayton scored once in the quarter on a White touchdown run.
With the win DHS extended its winning streak to seven games. The Pirates defeated the Hawks 57-38 last week.
Bernards stood out for Dayton in the win. The senior quarterback threw two touchdowns, ran for one touchdown and kicked one extra point.
The Cougars' lone touchdown came on a pass in the third quarter.
DHS had given up an average of 11.2 points prior to the contest.
A 56-21 Dayton victory was the result when the squads faced off last season.
In a 3A West Valley game next week Gervais (1-7) takes on Amity, and Dayton (7-0) will go up against Willamina also in a 3A West Valley game.
