Basketball Recap: Bret Stewart Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Buena Vista

While St. Mary didn't have the best season last year (they finished 9-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 47-45 win over the Buena Vista Demons on Friday. The 47-point effort marked the Pirates' lowest-scoring match of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead St. Mary's to victory, but perhaps none more so than Bret Stewart, who went 5 of 9 en route to 13 points. Another player making a difference was Kisean Dawson, who posted six points and four blocks.

Despite the defeat, Buena Vista had strong showings from Kaden Schell, who had 18 points and three steals, and Julian Lopez-Olsen, who earned 13 points and five boards. Schell has been hot, having posted two or more steals the last eight times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Knox Reid, who scored two points and five rebounds.

St. Mary's is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven contests, which provided a massive bump to their 6-4 record this season. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 23.5 points. As for Buena Vista, their loss dropped their record down to 8-3.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. St. Mary's will challenge La Junta at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. St. Mary's is facing La Junta at the right time seeing as La Junta is stuck on a six-game losing streak. Buena Vista has already played their next game (against Banning Lewis Academy), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
