Softball Recap: Palmview Comes Up Short

Palmview fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Mission on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell 9-5 to the Eagles. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Eagles this season, with their most recent defeat being a 3-0 loss last Friday.

Abigail Cantu spent all nine innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and five unearned) runs on 12 hits and racked up 12 Ks. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Yailyn Trevino made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-5 with two triples, two runs, and two RBI. Sydney Salinas was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run.

Palmview's loss dropped their record down to 13-9. As for Mission, they are on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-9 record this season.

Palmview and Mission are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. The Lobos will square off against Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial on Saturday. The Eagles will roll in looking for their 25th straight victory, something Palmview surely won't give up without a fight. As for Mission, they will host Flour Bluff at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Eagles' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Hornets have averaged an impressive 9.1 runs per game this season.
