Softball Recap: Eight Straight Home Wins for Hughesville

Hughesville waltzed into their contest on Wednesday with three straight wins... but they left with four. They were the clear victors by a 12-2 margin over the Wellsboro Hornets. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Spartans also won the last time the pair played back in May of 2024.

Ella Breneisen spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on four hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Maddie Smith, who went 3-for-4 with six stolen bases, four runs, and three RBI. Those six stolen bases gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Brynlee Williams, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.

Hughesville was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .393. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .323 or higher in six consecutive games.

Hughesville pushed their record up to 12-4 with the victory, which was their eighth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.8 runs over those games. As for Wellsboro, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-9 record this season.

Hughesville will be playing at home against Towanda at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Wellsboro has already played their next contest (against Athens), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
