Basketball Recap: Coronado's Luck Changes for the Better on Saturday

Coronado can finally bid farewell to their four-game losing streak thanks to their game on Saturday. They strolled past the Northgate Broncos with points to spare, taking the game 49-32. Given the Cougars' advantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 13th in Nevada, while the Broncos are ranked 151st in California), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Coronado to victory, but perhaps none more so than Gabrielle Zimmerman, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and ten assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Brooke Beranek, who posted eight points and four steals.

Zimmerman wasn't the only one working in the assists department: Coronado was working as a unit and finished the game with 20 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in January of 2024.

Despite the defeat, Northgate had strong showings from Isabella Lawson, who earned ten points, and Maddison Sardelich, who had eight points and 13 boards. Sardelich is crushing it when it comes to rebounds: she's pulled down at least eight every time she's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Jada Mayse, who posted three points and six rebounds.

Coronado's win bumped their record up to 6-4. As for Northgate, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 9-3.

Coronado didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 56-53 loss against Harker on the 30th. As for Northgate, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next matchup, a 43-23 victory against Fairfield on the 30th.
