Top 100 high school football career scoring leaders

Sugar Land sensation Ken Hall held mark for 36 years; Michael Hart took lead in 2003.

While Ken Hall's rushing stats may have been a bit of a mystery for nearly 20 years, there was no mystery about his scoring stats when he graduated following the 1953 season. His 899 career points were mentioned in newspapers across the country and his record stood for 36 years. He still ranks in the Top 25 on MaxPreps' list of the 100 all-time career scoring leaders.

The Sugar Land running back's rushing stats did not become nationally known until the Texas High School record book was published in the early 1970s. However, his scoring exploits were widely covered. He broke Hubert Bobo's one-year old record of 890 points in his final game and his mark stood until Brett Law of Sheridan (Ind.) broke it with 952 points following the 1989 season.

Hall, Law and Bobo are three members of MaxPreps' Top 100. They are also three of the seven players to hold the all-time scoring lead since 1920.

The first player to score over 500 career points is believed to be football legend Red Grange, who had 532 points during his career at Wheaton (Ill.) that ended in 1920. His record stood until 1934 when future Washington Redskin Dick Todd of Powell (Texas) scored 664 points in his career.

Bobo of Chauncey-Dover (Ohio) had 890 points through the 1952 season, but he gave way to Hall the next season. Meanwhile, Law held the record until T.A. McLendon of Albemarle (N.C.) went over 1,000 points with 1,076 in 2001. Future Michigan Wolverine great Michael Hart of Onondaga (Nedrow, N.Y.) set the current record of 1,246 points in 2003.

A total of six players from 2019 joined the Top 100 list, led by New Palestine (Ind.) running back Charlie Spegal, who became the seventh player to score over 1,000 points with 1,054. The list also includes NFL standouts like Derrick Henry of Yulee (Fla.), Christian McCaffrey of Valor Christian (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), Knowshon Moreno of Middletown South (N.J.), and Cedric Benson of Midland Lee (Texas).

The list was compiled using the National Federation of High Schools record book, The National High School Football Record Book by Doug Huff, the Cal-Hi Sports Record Book and Almanac by Mark Tennis and Nelson Tennis, Joe Lee Smith's Texas High School Football History website, the Georgia High School Football Historian's Association website, state association websites, the MaxPreps leaderboards and newspaper research via Newspapers.com.
