Baseball Recap: Lathrop Malemutes vs. Chugiak Mustangs
Lathrop had lost nine straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Thursday they dropped down to 0-3 to make it ten. They lost 14-2 to the Chugiak Mustangs. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Mustangs this season, with their most recent loss being a 17-0 defeat back in April.
As for Chugiak, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 9-2. The result was nothing new for the Mustangs, who have now won nine matchups by eight runs or more so far this season.
For Chugiak's part, Cole Lux made a big impact no matter where he played. He tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Lux has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up a single hit in six consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI. That's the most hits he has posted since back in May of 2025.
In other batting news, Chugiak let Owen McNeil and Sully Sims run wild. McNeil went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Sims got on base in two of his three plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs. Those two stolen bases gave Sims a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Sampson Young, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs and one double.
Coming up, Lathrop will take on West Anchorage at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Chugiak, they will square off against Palmer at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Mustangs 1.6, the Moose 3.4) so any runs scored will be well earned.
