The Goodland Cowboys will challenge the Russell Broncos at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. Goodland will be strutting in after a win while Russell will be coming in after a defeat.
Goodland is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They put the hurt on Scott with a sharp 18-10 victory on Tuesday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Cowboys.
Allison Cure made a big impact no matter where she played. She struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up six earned (and four unearned) runs off 14 hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Elly Evert and Hayden Short did most of the damage at the plate: Evert went 4-for-5 with three runs, one double, and one RBI, while Short went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those four hits gave Evert a new career-high. Destiny Gonzalez was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base.
Goodland kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. They are 4-1 when they post 11 or more hits.
Larned hit Russell with a nine-run first inning on Tuesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Broncos lost 12-2 to the Indians. The matchup marked the Broncos' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.
Russell saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Renya Anschutz, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI and one double.
Russell's loss was their tenth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-5. As for Goodland, their win bumped their record up to 5-9.
Thursday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Goodland hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .315. However, it's not like Russell struggles in that department as they've averaged .314. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Goodland's way against Russell when the teams last played back in April of 2024, as Goodland made off with a 15-3 victory. Will the Cowboys repeat their success, or do the Broncos have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
