Baseball Recap: Palmyra Beats Mastery for Their Fourth Straight Victory

Palmyra proved they can win big on Friday (they won by 19) and on Monday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Mastery Warrior 11-9. The victory was nothing new for the Panthers as they're now sitting on four straight.

Steven Peltz and Ian Smith made a splash no matter where they played. On the mound, Peltz pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Smith pitched two innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Peltz is becoming a predictor of Palmyra's success: when he allows at most two hits the team is 2-1 (and 4-6 when he doesn't). At the plate, Peltz went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Smith went 2-for-5 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Those two runs gave Peltz a new career-high.

In other batting news, Palmyra let Anthony Morgenstern and Brandon Howell run wild. Morgenstern got on base in all five of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI, while Howell got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. Those two RBI gave Morgenstern a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Dean Maute, who went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Palmyra always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .600. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Mastery only posted an OBP of .364.

Palmyra's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-7. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.5 runs on average over those games. As for Mastery, they now have a losing record of 2-3.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Palmyra will venture away from home to challenge Pemberton at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Mastery, they will head out to square off against Westampton Tech at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday.
