Basketball Recap: Las Cruces Falls Short Against Ranked Mayfield

On Friday, Las Cruces faced Mayfield in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The Las Cruces Bulldawgs took a 51-42 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Mayfield Trojans. The defeat was just more heartbreak for the Bulldawgs who fell 34-32 when the teams previously met back in January.

Several Bulldawgs players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Sofia Herrera, who posted 12 points in addition to five boards and four steals. Herrera is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last 17 games she's played. Bethzy Quinones was another key player, putting up ten points and four steals.

Mayfield's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Serena Carrasco, who went 5-for-8 on her way to 18 points. Carrasco continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Jazlene Ruiz, who put up nine points along with seven rebounds and three steals.

Las Cruces moved to 18-9 with that loss, which also ended their five-game winning streak. Those victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 26.4 points on average over those games. As for Mayfield, the win was the 23rd in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 24-3.

Las Cruces and Mayfield are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Las Cruces will take on La Cueva at 6:00 p.m. on March 7th. La Cueva will roll in looking for their seventh straight victory, something Las Cruces surely won't give up without a fight. As for Mayfield, they will face off against Roswell at 6:00 p.m. on March 7th. The timing is sure in Mayfield's favor as the team sits on ten straight wins at home while Roswell has been banged up by four consecutive losses on the road.
