Baseball Game Preview: Berne-Knox-Westerlo Bulldogs vs. Mayfield Panthers

The Berne-Knox-Westerlo Bulldogs will head out on the road to take on the Mayfield Panthers at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Berne-Knox-Westerlo has given up an average of 9.2 runs per game this season, but Wednesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Berne-Knox-Westerlo came into their game on Monday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They came up short against Cobleskill-Richmondville, falling 11-0. Having soared to a lofty ten runs in the game before, Berne-Knox-Westerlo's shutout was a dramatic turnaround.

Berne-Knox-Westerlo saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Matt Dwyer, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base.

Meanwhile, Mayfield was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss dating back to last season. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-3 heartbreaker at the hands of Galway.

Cubby Roth (C) was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over six innings while giving up five earned runs off six hits. Roth (C) was even better at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one double.

In other batting news, Landon Conyne was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and one RBI.

Mayfield's record now sits at 0-2. As for Berne-Knox-Westerlo, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-6-1 record this season.

Berne-Knox-Westerlo took their victory against Mayfield in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 16-10 score. Will the Bulldogs repeat their success, or do the Panthers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
