Baseball Game Preview: Maine South Hawks vs. Evanston Wildkits

The Maine South Hawks will face off against the Evanston Wildkits at 4:45 p.m. on Monday. Maine South will be strutting in after a victory while Evanston will be coming in after a defeat.

Maine South is returning to their home field after beating Riverside-Brookfield on theirs, despite the fact Riverside-Brookfield has dominated at home this season. The Hawks came out on top in a nail-biter against the Bulldogs on Saturday, sneaking past 4-2.

Jack Gianikos looked comfortable as he struck out six batters over 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned run but no hits. He is becoming a predictor of Maine South's success: when he allows at most one hit the team is 3-1 (and 12-13 when he doesn't).

On the hitting side, Luka Stojakovic was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Maine South is undefeated when Stojakovic posts two or more runs, but 12-14 otherwise.

Meanwhile, Thursday just wasn't the day for Evanston's offense. They took a 3-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of Glenbrook South on Thursday. The game marked the first time this year in which the Wildkits were not able to get on the board.

This is the second loss in a row for Evanston and nudges their season record down to 11-13. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 8 runs in those games. As for Maine South, they now have a winning record of 15-14.

Maine South couldn't quite get it done against Evanston in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 as they fell 4-1. Can the Hawks avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
