Softball Recap: Martin County Wins Going Away Against Hobgood Charter

The Martin County Gators made easy work of the Hobgood Charter Raiders on Wednesday and carried off an 11-1 victory. The result was nothing new for the Gators, who have now won 14 games by seven runs or more so far this season.

Erica Sturgill made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out seven over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.

In other batting news, Ty'Hiera Wooten was a standout: she got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Another player making a difference was Rylah Ethridge, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Martin County always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .567. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Hobgood Charter only posted an OBP of .167.

The win made it two in a row for Martin County and bumps their season record up to 16-2. The team dominated over those games too, winning by an average of 8.5 runs. As for Hobgood Charter, their defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 7-4.

Martin County has already played their next contest, a 7-0 victory against Tarboro on the 17th. As for Hobgood Charter, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next matchup, a 15-5 win against Mattamuskeet on the 17th.
