Basketball Recap: St. Mary Academy-Bay View Takes a Loss

It's hard to turn regular season success into postseason wins, a fact St. Mary Academy-Bay View can now relate to. They lost 66-40 to the North Kingstown Skippers on Friday. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Bengals have suffered since January 16th.

Despite the loss, St. Mary Academy-Bay View saw an underclassman step up: freshman Genesis Castro shot 75% from the field to rack up 22 points. Castro continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played.

It was another big night for Jaelyn Holmes, who went 11-for-20 on her way to 27 points and four steals for North Kingstown. The game was Holmes' sixth in a row with at least 16 points. Shea Kalin was another key player, shooting 56% from the field en route to 16 points along with five rebounds and three steals.

St. Mary Academy-Bay View has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 11-9 record this season. North Kingstown's victory was their eighth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 22-1.

St. Mary Academy-Bay View will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Narragansett at 2:00 p.m. on March 8th. Narragansett will roll in looking for their seventh straight win, something St. Mary Academy-Bay View surely won't give up without a fight. As for North Kingstown, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 47-40 victory against Westerly on the 28th.
