Preview: Pueblo South Colts vs. Pueblo East Eagles

The Pueblo South Colts will be playing at home against the Pueblo East Eagles at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Pueblo South comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 16 points in their last three games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse.

Pueblo South suffered their biggest loss yet this season on Thursday. They took a serious blow against Rampart, falling 72-16. While losing is never fun, Pueblo South can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 266th, while Rampart is ranked 106th).

Despite the defeat, Pueblo South had strong showings from Kyla Cruz, who scored eight points along with five rebounds, and Gracie Gonzales, who scored six points along with two blocks. That's the first time this season that Gonzales posted two or more blocks.

In what's become a running theme this season, Pueblo East gave their fans yet another huge win on Friday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Harrison 47-11 on the road. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest victory Pueblo East has posted since December 5, 2023.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Pueblo East to victory, but perhaps none more so than Ilyne Avila, who scored six points along with nine rebounds and eight steals. Avila hasn't dropped below two steals for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Myah Abeyta, who scored 13 points along with five assists and three steals.

Pueblo South has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost seven of their last eight matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-9 record this season. As for Pueblo East, their victory bumped their record up to 5-8.

Pueblo South couldn't quite finish off Pueblo East when the teams last played back in February of 2023 and fell 42-39. Thankfully for Pueblo South, Grace Helzer (who scored 13 points along with eight rebounds and eight steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
