Basketball Preview: Winfield Generals vs. St. Albans Red Dragons
Winfield is 1-7 against the Red Dragons since February of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Winfield Generals will head out on the road to face off against the St. Albans Red Dragons at 7:00 p.m. Both teams come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Winning is just a little bit easier when you outrebound your opponent 14 to 5 on the offensive boards, a fact Winfield proved on Saturday. They managed a 58-54 victory over Sissonville.
Kaitlyn Sayre was a one-man wrecking crew for Winfield as she dropped a double-double on 21 points and 12 rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Sayre has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Antonela Johnson, who scored six points along with seven rebounds and five assists.
Meanwhile, St. Albans put the finishing touches on their sixth blowout victory of the season on Thursday. They breezed by South Charleston on the road to the tune of 64-27. Given St. Albans' advantage in MaxPreps' West Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 12th, while the Black Eagles are ranked 80th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Winfield now has a winning record of 10-9. As for St. Albans, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games, which provided a nice bump to their 11-4 record this season.
Winfield came up short against the Red Dragons when the teams last played back in December of 2022, falling 47-37. Can Winfield avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
