Baseball Recap: Blountstown Sets Scoring Season-High Against Vernon

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Blountstown). They were the clear victors by an 18-1 margin over the Vernon Yellowjackets on Thursday. With that win, the Tigers brought their scoring average up to 6.5 runs per game.

Daniel Pope was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching one inning while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two hits in seven consecutive appearances. He was even better at the plate, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3. Those three runs gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Bryson Fleck was a standout: he went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and two doubles. Blountstown is 3-1 when Fleck posts two or more runs, but 3-13 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Terrell Williams, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4.

Blountstown kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.6 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 matchups they've averaged 12.4.

Blountstown's victory ended an eight-game drought on the road and puts them at 6-14. As for Vernon, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-13.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Blountstown will venture away from home to square off against Sneads at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Blountstown's pitchers better be ready for this one: Sneads has averaged an impressive 7.1 runs per game this season. As for Vernon, they will head out to challenge Jefferson County at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Vernon is facing Jefferson County at the right time seeing as Jefferson County is stuck on a four-game losing streak.
