Baseball Recap: Marcos de Niza Comes Up Short

Marcos de Niza fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Coconino on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Panthers by a score of 15-14. The Padres' defeat continues a trend for the squad, making it three in a row.

Izayiah Abril put in work while hitting and pitching. He tossed five innings while giving up just one earned (and seven unearned) runs off ten hits. Abril was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.

In other batting news, Julien Arroyo and Jackson Matherson stepped up to the plate in a big way. Arroyo scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of his six plate appearances, while Matherson scored two runs while going 2-for-4. Marcos de Niza is 3-1 when Matherson posts two or more runs, but 3-10 otherwise. Abel Valenzuela was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Marcos de Niza's loss dropped their record down to 6-11. As for Coconino, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-10-1 record this season.

Marcos de Niza will venture away from home to face off against Cactus Shadows at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Padres' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Falcons have averaged an impressive 11 runs per game this season. As for Coconino, they will host Mingus at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
