Basketball Recap: Steele Comes Up Short

Steele fought the good fight in their overtime contest against Avon on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took an 87-79 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Eagles. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game on Tuesday (77), the Comets still had to take the loss.

When it comes to explaining why Steele lost, don't look at Jack Coleman. Despite the final result, he went 14-for-24 to rack up 34 points in addition to six rebounds and four steals. Coleman's big performance that evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least 20 points. Another player making a difference was Gavin Beckler, who shot 88% from the field en route to 14 points.

This is the second loss in a row for Steele and nudges their season record down to 11-9. Those defeats can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 78.0 points over those games. As for Avon, their win bumped their record up to 13-5.

Coming up, Steele will challenge Midview at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Comets will be up against the Middies' rather soft defense (which has allowed 69.33 points per game), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
