Basketball Game Preview: Proviso East Pirates vs. Thornwood Thunderbirds

The Proviso East Pirates just played last yesterday, but they'll still welcome the Thornwood Thunderbirds at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Proviso East took a loss when they played away from home on Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They came out on top against Berwyn/Cicero Morton by a score of 46-35. Given the Pirates' advantage in MaxPreps' Illinois basketball rankings (they are ranked 218th, while the Mustangs are ranked 477th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Proviso East to victory, but perhaps none more so than Camiya Marshall, who posted 11 points and six steals. Marshall is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 14 games she's played. Another player making a difference was Ava Kimble, who went 6 for 10 en route to 12 points along with five boards and three steals.

Meanwhile, it was a Battle of the Birds when Thornwood challenged Thornridge on Thursday. Thornwood walked away with a 49-36 win over Thornridge.

Proviso East has been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 11 games, which provided a nice bump to their 19-9 record this season. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to assists: they averaged an imposing 9.27 assists in those games compared to only 9.27 in the others. As for Thornwood, their victory ended an 11-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 4-24.
