Basketball Recap: La Cueva Takes a Loss

If La Cueva was feeling good fresh off their 83-48 takedown of Capital last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The La Cueva Bears took a 59-49 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Santa Fe Demons on Thursday. The Bears were not able to make up for their defeat to the Demons from their previous meeting back in December of 2023.

Despite the loss, La Cueva still got an impressive performance from Hunter Butler, who went 5 for 8 on his way to 19 points. Another player making a difference was Chase Roberts, who posted six points.

Even though they lost, La Cueva smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in nine consecutive contests.

La Cueva's loss was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 12-8. As for Santa Fe, the victory (which was their eighth in a row) raised their record to 15-5.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. La Cueva will head out to challenge Manzano at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The timing isn't great for Manzano: they have been struggling with four straight losses at home, while La Cueva has snatched up three consecutive wins on the road. As for Santa Fe, they will venture away from home to take on Sandia at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Sandia knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past 20 matches -- so hopefully Santa Fe likes a good challenge.
