Softball Recap: Holgate Tigers vs. Continental Pirates
Holgate extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to eight on Monday, dropping their season record down to 0-6 in the process. They fell 5-2 to the Continental Pirates. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Tigers of the 9-8 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.
Graysen Jones spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five runs (all of which were unearned) on four hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.
At the plate, Holgate saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mia Kelly, who went 1-for-3 with one triple and one run.
As for Continental, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 7-6. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games.
On Continental's side, Gracie Homier made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 17 over seven innings pitched. Those 17 strikeouts gave Homier a new career-high. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
In other batting news, Maeci Dockery was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and one run. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Holgate will head out to face off against Hilltop at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Cadets' pitching crew has only allowed 3.3 runs per game this season, so the Tigers' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Continental, they will square off against Kalida at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
