Baseball Recap: Canon City Makes It Five in a Row at Home

There's no place like home for Canon City, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Saturday. They put the hurt on the Coronado Cougars with a sharp 10-0 victory on Thursday. The result was nothing new for the Tigers, who have now won seven contests by six runs or more so far this season.

Zeke Martinez was a major factor no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in nine consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with four RBI. Those two hits gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Justin Loveless was a standout: he got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March. Peter Hershberger was another key player, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with three runs and one stolen base.

Canon City pushed their record up to 13-8 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games. As for Coronado, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-15 record this season.

Canon City will have a chance to go back-to-back against Coronado: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
